The Clarion Have a good spring break, www.brevard.edu/clarion Volume 77, Issue 21 Web Edition SERVING BREVARD COLLEGE SINCE 1935 BC! March 2, 2012 Campus Activities Board is hosting BC's Annual Dance Marathon for 2012 on March 24. This year we are helping Relay For Life —hence the name, Dance for Life. We are encouraging teams to raise money to donate to the American Cancer Society with a minimum of $50 a team. We encourage everyone to raise as much as they can, and whichever team raises the most wins an extra prize. On March 24, the actual day of Dance for Life, we have come up with themes to keep things interesting. Also, we have changed the time of day that this will actually occur. Instead of staying up through the night trying to keep motivated dancing, we will be dancing from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.. Food will be provided and cell phones and watches are allowed this year. This will be a great event and we hope you will help by joining us. Get a team together of 5 people and fill out an application form by March 14. Raise $10 a person and more to turn in the day of Dance for Life. Then dance the day away! Contact Megan Walters for more details. All BC Clubs must participate and it would be great to have sports teams, faculty, and staff participate too. Alternative spring break pre-flection By Josh Mower staff Writer New York City. Even the name sounds distant. Orange fliers were posted one month ago with an application process to attend the Alternative Spring Break Trip to NYC. Though the fliers are now long gone, the trip is still in full focus. The team consists of faculty leaders (Der Vang and Megan Walters), a student leader (Josh Mower), and eleven other students. The once unbelievable pilgrimage to the “Big Apple” is going to become concrete as the team boards their train this coming Saturday morning in Charlotte. Of the 14 names on the roster, only half have experienced the city personally, but whether this will be a first time visit or a return each will come back with stories to tell. Sophomore Madeline Sonner, who has been to NYC before, looks forward to connecting with her fellow teammates and establishing new friendships along the way. She also is ecstatic about serving in the City and learning new experiences that will be associated with the sites... and can’t wait to: "HAVE FUN IN NYC!" “I want to to stop identifying homeless people as ‘Those People,”’ says Der Vang, our AmeriCorps Vista here on campus who has never been to NYC. Vang wants to see what a high demand homeless shelter looks like, as well as what homelessness looks like in such a broad perspective. As the spring breakers head up north to learn about poverty up close and personal in the week ahead, there is much to be learned with little knowledge of what exactly to expect. Lives will be impacted as others are changed, but all under the cause of uniting and serving together. SGA update By Carolina Anderson StaffVVritei^^^^^_ The Student Government Association has come up with a few new ideas to change up the BCE courses at Brevard College. As of now everything is in the proposal stage. Changing the look of BCE classes: BCE 111 • proposed to be completely wiped out. BCE 211 • proposed to become the freshmen class (BCE) • Freshmen can start off school with a 200 level class • Also used for gaining service hours • Not only focused on environmental issues. BCE (sophomore level) • used as a peer mentoring program • meeting with freshmen once a week (2 sophomores to each group) BCE Transfer • a chance to sit down and have lunch with different department members • get to know all the different departments a little better BCE LINC • will stay as is (still a junior level class) BCE 411 • more focus on the “beyond” part of the class • interview prep courses • stock markets education • taxes/checkbook balancing courses • etiquette dinner hosted by the President (once the house is completed) • preparing students for life after college, giving them knowledge that will assist them Changing the look of the student center (Coltrane) The Student Government Association and the President are currently talking to different food companies about what to do with the current Coltrane space, including looking for the best deal and for the best price All ideas are currently under the proposal stage. The SGA executive board meets every Monday at 6 p.m. in the room next to the microwave in the cafe; a meeting for clubs and all others interested every Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the same room.
